Nerdy wine.  Right up my alley.

Polaroid is gone, but you can still fake it

Poladroid is an OS X application that accepts a photo and then makes that photo look like it was taken with a Polaroid camera.  Since Polaroid stopped making the film for it’s instant cameras this sort of thing will be the only way we will be able to get that Polaroid feeling in the future.

How well does it work?  I’m not Polaroid expert but it doesn’t look too bad.  There is some vignetting (darkness around the edges) and the colours are very contrasty (not a real word).  Poladroid even adds an authentic looking white frame around the edges.

I ran into a couple of problems.  First is that the user has no control where photos are cropped.  Unless your subjects are in the exact middle of the photo this can result in decapitations or delimbitations (also not a real word).

When editing a photo Poladroid even recreates the “developing” process.  You are presented with a grey/brown/purple image that slowly develops into your photo.  Kind of a neat idea but it annoyed me after the first two photos.  You can speed it up by shaking the photo with your mouse, but still….

It’s a cute little program.  It isn’t perfect but hopefully it can help numb the pain and sense of loss some Polaroid fans are feeling.
Andrew Chipman, I’m looking at you.

Stop motion.  The final 10 seconds are the most magical 10 seconds of video I’ve ever been a part of.

This guy picks a song and dances to it in an interesting location.  I like it.  Admittedly the premise starts to wear a bit thin halfway through a song but I find these videos to be very inspirational.  I need more stuff like this in my life to motivate me.

I’m going away with my church Youth Group for the weekend.  I’m placing a requirement on myself that I film some sort of funny little video thing.  There.  I’ve made you a promise.  (“You” in this case is Tiffany Ratbones.  You seem to be the only one who reads this anyways.)

Get Rich Quick

I plan on doing a what-I’m-thankful-for thanksgiving post later but right now I’m going to talk about greed.

I was clearing tables at my serving job the other day when a special section of The National Post newspaper caught my attention.  It was a six page spread about Online Investing.  I saved that part, took it home and gave it a read-through.

My conclusion was that this was something I’d like to try my hand at.  However I don’t really have any disposable cash right now.  So I signed up for an online “game” called Wall Street Survivor.  It let’s you use pretend money to pretend to buy real stocks using real market data.

I bought 5 shares in Apple at $104.88 apiece.  As I’m writing this post they’ve gone up 5.13% and I’ve made a cool $26.90.

What I’m interested in is what will happen tomorrow after Apple’s big press conference.  They’re announcing new laptops and maybe some other things.  Analysts are expecting stock value to jump if they announce cool stuff or to drop even further if things are just so-so.

Anyways, I’m trying out some other fake stocks too.  For a couple of trades I just copied the guys ranked highly in the “game” section.  They must know what they’re doing.

The idea is that by the time I’ve saved a few dollars I will have learned enough to not completely waste my hard-earned scrilla.

I have the hots for…

James Friesen and I have a new crush.

Young Olivia Newton John.  Oh man.  I’ve watched this video around 5 times today.
