I have also have a similar problem. First I ordered an iphone, waited the 5-7 days to receive it in the mail. It never came. I called on 8th day to enquire about my order.. well it was never ordered! Oh and the plan I wanted had also expired. AND, now the phone is on back order and is not expected for 3 weeks. So I spoke to a very helpful representative who re-ordered my phone and talked me into the 6GB/mo data plan, which I was to start paying for immediately. I told him if the phone is back ordered, I don't want to pay for a data plan for 3 weeks for nothing... so he says he will date it ahead for when I receive my phone, but my phone's not on back order, just the 8gb model. So I finally get my phone 3 days later, manage to get the expired plan, sign up for an extra $30 a month to make sure I'm covered... About two weeks later I recieve 4 calls (once a day) during business hours at work (so I cannot answer my personal phone). No message left. I change my voicemail message to state that I can't answer calls from 9-5pm... so PLEASE leave a message. Finally the Executive Response center leaves me a message about excessive usage! I think.. whoa how could I have possibly gone over 6GB in less than half a month??? Now I'm afraid to use my phone. Turns out the data plan was not applied until 3 days AFTER i received my phone.. so now I have a $1500 bill? OMFG. I didn't pay attention to the date he said he'd make it effective. I asked for it to be active for when I recieve my phone, not before. I called the exec response line, of course no one answers my call at all, and a recorded message says they will get back to me in 24 hours. So my next move was to turn my cell off! 24 hours? So I can be dinged another $1500? Yeesh. I had to call billing and get it sorted out. I'm going on the word of the staff there, that the charges will be reversed if I call back again when I receive my incredible bill.

It makes sense to me that the data plan should be in effect as soon as you activate your new phone on the network. Would that not save a pile of grief and a few ulcers?
